The City
Vadodara is the second largest city of Gujarat state, located in the western parts of India. Also known as kala nagari (city of art) and sanskari nagari (city of culture) of Gujarat, the city is known for its rich cultural heritage.
Previously known as Baroda, it was capital of one of largest and richest Indian princely states during the rule of British Empire, governed by Gaekwad dynasty of former Maratha empire. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the ruler of Vadodara from 1875 to 1939, was a great socio-economic reformer and a patron of arts, architecture, and music. He initiated many socio-economic reforms, that led to the establishment of banks, markets, schools, public libraries, parks, museums and university in Vadodara. He invited several British architects to design and execute these buildings along with several private palaces and gardens in the city.
